You’ve probably read about this in a headline before you read about it anywhere useful. The Canadian picture also changed in 2026, so half of what’s online about Wegovy Canada is now out of date. Here’s where things actually stand.

Key takeaways

  • Wegovy is a brand of semaglutide, given as a once-weekly injection. Health Canada authorized it in November 2021.
  • In January 2026 Health Canada added a second authorized indication under its conditional pathway, for non-cirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.
  • Semaglutide data exclusivity ended in Canada in January 2026, and the first generic of Wegovy was authorized in June 2026.
  • There is no oral Wegovy tablet authorized in Canada. Oral semaglutide exists here as Rybelsus, which is authorized for type 2 diabetes rather than weight management.
  • Expect months rather than weeks, and expect gastrointestinal effects during dose escalation.

Wegovy Canada: what is it, and how does semaglutide work?

Wegovy is a brand name. The active ingredient is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, delivered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection.

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after eating, and it’s one of the signals that tells you how much to eat. Semaglutide is built to copy it closely, and GLP-1 receptors sit in the parts of the brain that handle appetite. The drug also slows how fast the stomach empties.

The effect people describe is that food stops taking up so much mental space. Portions shrink because appetite shrinks, not because willpower improved.

Health Canada’s product record shows Wegovy authorized on 23 November 2021 under Novo Nordisk Canada, though it did not reach Canadian pharmacies until 2024.

Who qualifies, and how to get Wegovy in Canada

Eligibility is set by the authorized indication and then by a clinical assessment. The two aren’t the same thing. How to get Wegovy in Canada comes down to that second step: a prescription follows an assessment by a licensed provider, not a purchase decision.

The chronic weight management indication is based on body mass index. Generally that means a starting BMI at or above 30, or at or above 27 with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure. Your provider also looks at your history, your current medications, and whether anything rules the drug class out.

Since January 2026 there’s a second authorized indication in Canada. It was granted under the Notice of Compliance with conditions pathway. It covers non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. Conditional means the evidence supported approval but more is still expected, and patients treated on that basis should be told so.

We cover the eligibility criteria in more depth in our guide to who qualifies for Wegovy in Canada.

What affects Wegovy cost Canada-wide?

Four things, mainly. Wegovy cost canada searches usually want a single number, and there isn’t one.

Dose. Wegovy dosage escalates over roughly four months, so early months and maintenance months don’t cost the same.

Coverage. Plans differ a lot on whether they cover weight management medication at all. Many that do require prior approval. Ask your plan directly rather than assuming.

Whether you use brand or generic. This is the part that changed in 2026, and it’s covered below.

The clinical service around it. Assessment, follow-up and monitoring may be bundled or billed separately depending on the provider.

Prices move, so we don’t publish a figure here that will be wrong in three months. Ask your pharmacy for the current price at the specific dose you’d be starting on, and ask what it becomes at maintenance.

What did generics change in 2026?

Quite a lot, and quickly.

Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide data exclusivity in Canada expired in early January 2026. That opened the pathway for generic manufacturers, and several submissions followed.

The first generic semaglutide injections authorized here carried the type 2 diabetes indication only. That made them generic equivalents of Ozempic, not of Wegovy. Then on 29 June 2026, Health Canada authorized Sevmia, filed by Apotex, as the first generic semaglutide indicated for chronic weight management in patients aged 12 and over. Six further generic submissions were under review at the time.

Authorized is not the same as available on a shelf, and a newly authorized generic takes time to reach distribution and to get a published price. Ask your pharmacy what they can actually order today, rather than what exists on paper.

wegovy tabletsIs there a Wegovy pill in Canada?

Not for weight management, and this trips people up because the US answer is now different.

Oral semaglutide does exist in Canada as Rybelsus, a daily tablet. It’s authorized for type 2 diabetes, not for chronic weight management. An oral semaglutide tablet for weight reduction has been authorized in the United States. It has not been authorized here.

So if you’re in Canada and set on avoiding injections, the honest answer today is that the authorized weight management options are injectables.

Wegovy vs Ozempic Canada: what’s the difference?

Same molecule, different products.

Wegovy Ozempic
Active ingredient Semaglutide Semaglutide
Authorized indication in Canada Chronic weight management, plus non-cirrhotic MASH with F2 to F3 fibrosis since January 2026 Type 2 diabetes
Route Weekly subcutaneous injection Weekly subcutaneous injection
Maximum dose Higher Lower
Generic available Yes, authorized June 2026 Yes, authorized earlier in 2026

The distinction that matters clinically is the authorized indication and the dose range, not the molecule. Which one is appropriate is a decision for your provider based on why you’re being treated.

How long does it take for Wegovy to work?

Longer than the headlines imply.

Dosing starts low on purpose and steps up over roughly four months, to reduce gut effects. Since you aren’t on a maintenance dose during that stretch, early results are not a fair test of the medication.

Appetite changes often show up within the first few weeks. Weight change is assessed over months, and the pivotal trials ran more than a year. Judge it at six to twelve months with your provider, not at week four.

What are the side effects, and who should avoid it?

Gut effects are the common ones, and they cluster during dose escalation. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain lead the list. Headache, fatigue, dizziness and reflux are also reported. Most ease as the body adjusts. Not for everyone, though.

Less common but more serious concerns in this drug class include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Kidney injury can follow dehydration from severe vomiting or diarrhea. Low blood sugar is a risk alongside insulin or a sulfonylurea. Existing diabetic retinopathy can worsen.

This class isn’t appropriate for everyone. Tell your provider about any personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. Also mention a previous serious allergic reaction to semaglutide, pancreatitis, or severe gastroparesis. Say so if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Semaglutide has a long half-life, so planning ahead matters.

Tell any clinician about to give you general anaesthesia or deep sedation that you take a GLP-1 medication. Delayed stomach emptying matters for pre-operative fasting.

Seek medical care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it radiates to your back, for signs of an allergic reaction, or for vomiting or diarrhea severe enough to leave you dehydrated.

For the full authorized safety information, ask your pharmacist for the Canadian product monograph. It’s available through Health Canada’s Drug Product Database.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Wegovy cost in Canada?

It depends on your dose, your coverage and whether you’re using the brand or a newly authorized generic. Prices moved through 2026 as generics arrived. Ask your pharmacy for the current price at your specific dose, and ask what maintenance costs, since the two differ.

Is Wegovy covered by insurance in Canada?

Coverage varies widely between public and private plans, and many plans that cover weight management medication require prior approval first. Some cover it only for specific indications. Contact your plan directly with the drug identification number before assuming either way.

Who qualifies for Wegovy in Canada?

The chronic weight management indication is based on BMI, generally 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition. A clinical assessment then looks at your history, medications and contraindications. Since January 2026 there is also a conditional indication for non-cirrhotic MASH with F2 to F3 fibrosis.

How long does it take for Wegovy to work?

Dosing escalates over roughly four months before maintenance, so early weeks aren’t a fair test. Appetite changes are often noticed within weeks. Weight change is assessed over months, and the pivotal trials ran over a year. Review it with your provider at six to twelve months.

Wegovy vs Ozempic in Canada: which is which?

Both are semaglutide injections from the same manufacturer. Wegovy is authorized for chronic weight management and, since January 2026, for non-cirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis. Ozempic is authorized for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy goes to a higher maximum dose.

Is there a Wegovy pill in Canada?

Not for weight management. Oral semaglutide is authorized here as Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes. An oral semaglutide tablet for weight reduction has been authorized in the United States but not in Canada.

The bottom line

Wegovy is semaglutide by weekly injection. It’s been authorized in Canada since 2021 and now carries a second conditional indication. Generics arrived in 2026 and are still working into distribution, so cost is worth asking about rather than assuming.
